How to calculate, implement & communicate professional fee based pricing

Click here to launch The Professional Fees Journey Plan

Many practitioners believe professional fee based pricing provides a satisfying and effective way to provide quality professional care and at the same time offer competitive contact lens and spectacle pricing. Following the success of the “How much are you worth?” seminars and CD-Rom by CIBA VISION in 2006 we have received several requests to help our customers to implement a professional fee based system.

The Professional Fees Journey Plan is intended to be a guide for practitioners who want to change their fee structure but are unsure of how to go about it. Changing to professional fee based pricing is sometimes seen as a large and challenging process, so the journey plan breaks it down into smaller manageable steps. By approaching each step one at a time the journey does not seem so daunting.

Clicking on each step on the journey you will take you to a detailed description of what is involved at each stage. There are tools you can download in several of the steps to give further information and provide valuable resources for you to use. These include a spreadsheet to calculate fees that will cover all practice overheads and profit as well as a patient communication leaflet that can be customised to your practice needs. In Step 1 you can watch a presentation from Potters Bar Eyecare on their experience changing to professional fees to see how they made it work for them.

Some steps are longer than others but all are important to help you maximise the success of a new fees structure in your practice. There is also a link to a web based management consultant who can answer questions related to any of the steps in the journey.

Please note this is a guide only for interested practitioners and not a substitute for professional practice management advice.

“Professional pricing is probably the best move that my contact lens practice has made since I introduced disposable lenses to my patients in 1993!”

— Martin Ling, Optometrist, North Walsham
