“The Solubility and Release of Substances in Soft Contact Lenses” by Dr. Lynn Winterton
Soft contact lens materials have evolved over recent years in the quest for a contact lens that provides the wearer with the ultimate ‘on eye’ comfort experience. Numerous studies have shown that discomfort is the primary cause of contact lens wearers ‘dropping out’ or lapsing from lens wear.
In this lecture Lyn Winterton guides the practitioner through some of the innovative developments that can be employed to improve the wearer experience. He is able to show that recent innovations can lead to a reduction in the static coefficient of friction that occurs at the lens surface to help overcome the challenges of discomfort and move towards a truly biomimetic lens. Finally, he provides a brief glimpse into the future on how sustained release technology could be used for controlled drug delivery to the eye and how this might improve the lives of those dependent on such medication.
